Our “Last Chance” Foster ~ Sooner Sarah
Ken and I don’t host fosters very often. I often joke that we are the worst possible foster home – we have lots of dogs and we work from home, so we’re here pretty much 24/7. We’re really nothing like your average pet home a dog would go into.
But, sometimes we have an opportunity to help a dog that’s not quite ready to go into a traditional foster or pet home and Sarah is one such case…
She’s from Birmingham and had a history of shyness with people and severe dog aggression in the adoption kennel, where she’s been for a couple years now. She has also shown some aggression (growling/snarling) towards people. She was deemed un-adoptable because of her aggression, so the folks at the adoption kennel were nice enough to give Sarah a chance to come stay with us to see if we could help her work through her issues and learn proper pet behavior. Ken and I like to work with greyhounds that have these sorts of issues. We believe that environment dictates behavior and the proper guidance can give “bad dogs” the opportunity they need to become “good dogs.”
Isn’t she a beauty?

It’s been about a month and I think she’s almost ready to move on to a new foster home where she can start looking for her forever home. She’s a fast learner! And, of course, credit goes to our amazing pack who shows once again that dogs who can set a good example of how a balanced dog behaves is often the best way to teach a dog who’s having issues. There are still a few situations I want to put her in to see how she handles them, so I’m not ready to let her go right now, but I wanted to share some pics with everyone.
I got this pic last week after a turnout, resting her head on The Queen

And this one actually surprised me a little bit…this is Rocky’s night time bed (it’s by my side of the human bed and he ALWAYS sleeps right there next to me). So, Sarah had to choose to go over to the far side of the bedroom and lay down in that small space with Rocky. There were plenty of other beds available, including another unoccupied bed in the same room.

She’s come a long way and has been a joy to have. I am glad we seem to have been able to make a difference and hopefully, help her find a forever home that will cherish her. She will make a fantastic pet for some lucky person out there who wants to give Sarah the same chance we have. I checked out greyhound data and it looks like all of her siblings have already found homes, so now it’s almost Sarah’s turn!
