My Greyhound Ink – Finally!

May 4, 2010

I love tattoo’s. Love. Them. I’ve always envied folks that have the courage to decorate their body with this amazing artform. Fortunately Ken feels the same way and, though we’ve talked for years about getting some tattoos, we’ve never acted on it…until now. Ken has a couple, poorly done tattoos from his younger days that he wants to cover up (note: always review the artists book BEFORE you let them lay hands and needles on you!!) and I want to pay homage to the breed that has changed my life: greyhounds. I’ve been eyeing a particular design for a couple years now and, while I am planning a bigger tribute in the future, I thought a small and simple design would be a good way to get my feet wet. It’s been many years since I’ve gone under the needle.

All of my tattoos to this point have been easily hideable – on my lower back and abdomen. I guess it’s the fear of mom and dad lingering in the back of my mind  But at 35 I realized that it’s my body and if I want to ink it up, I will! Mom and Dad haven’t been huge fans of every decision I’ve made in life, so this might just be another one of those things. I opted to put my greyhound on my lower leg, with plans to add a pink lotus on my other leg to compliment it.

All of our work was done by Kate Bonesteel-Clark at  Monster Ink, a wonderfully talented artist and all around awesome person.

Here you can see the original artwork I brought in and that tattoo midway through the process

And the final product, which I absolutely love:

Ken’s work was a little more detailed and took 5-6 hours to complete (all in one sitting!). He chose a tattoo of Lord Ganesha, a Hindu deity that is known as the remover of obstacles, among other things. Being a Hindu Buddhist, this design was a perfect fit for Ken.

Midway, the outline is done and it’s time for some color!

And the final  product, which absolutely blew me away. The details Kate was able to get in the hat and lei are unbelievable…all the way down to the mouse, she truly brought this work of are to life on Ken’s arm.

And some up close

My favorite part, I think, is the little mouse

Stay tuned for more tattoos. They’re like greyhounds….you can’t have just one! Or two, or three….
