Poor Dinky-Doo (Echo) Had Her Ear Chomped Off

February 3, 2010

I was working out this morning and, as usual, brought some hounds with me so they could work over some raw bones. I finished working out, picked up the bones and was getting ready to head back up to the house when Peanut decided to take one more look around one of the crates to make sure nothing was left behind. Echo started to follow her in (the crates are pretty big – 3′ x 4′ so two dogs can easily walk in together) when Peanut suddenly became protective of the space and gave Echo a stern warning snap. Echo was definitely caught off guard and her ear got in the way which resulted in a large chunk  being sheered off.

I’ve dealt with my share of doggy ear wounds, but an impromptu ear amputation is definitely out of the realm of things I feel comfortable handling at home. So, off to the vet we went and Echo was admitted for a quick surgery to tidy up the ear as best they could.

She should heal up fine…just a wee bit lighter than she was this morning. Surprisingly, her ego seemed a lot more bruised than her ear.

And here’s the “chomper” Peanut…she really is a very sweet girl! Snapping at anyone is very out of character for her.
