Let the Healing Begin! (before and after pics)
We took the bandage off Melody’s foot about 48 hours after her surgery to amputate a front, outer (pinky) toe. We were already prepared for what it would look like since another one of our hounds, Bucky, came to us with the same toe missing….but, it was still a little bit of a shock! The surgery site looks really good. It’s a little red still, but otherwise not overly swollen or ‘angry’ looking. She’s still not putting any real weight on that foot, but she did just have an entire toe removed two days ago so I’m not really concerned at this point.
Here are a couple before pictures – remember that she re-injured the toe again, which is what prompted us to finally schedule the surgery, so that toe is really swollen.

The outer most (lateral) toe on your right, her left was amputated. The toe next to it was also injured in the original incident and at one point we thought we might need to ampuate that one as well, but it has healed up nicely over time and doesn’t seem to give her any problems.

And here are the post-amputation pictures, about 48 hours after surgery and just after we removed the bandages

A Kan-Sal muzzle will keep her from licking the wound and we’ll still need to put a bag over it when she goes outside due to all the rain and subsequent mud in the yard! (I’m not sure why I resized this picture so small
)

When I can keep an eye on her to make sure she’s not disturbing her stitches, the muzzle can come off….only 2 days out of surgery and she’s a happy girl!
