Peanut is finally a Couch Potato

February 10, 2010

Peanut has been retired for, oh, I guess coming up on a year now. And in that year you’d think I’d have figured her out…but there are just some greyhounds who defy classification. For the most part, she’s fairly timid and reserved. However, when she decides to commit to doing to something, she’s balls to the wall. I think she learns a lot by watching other dogs and isn’t naturally as graceful as some…it takes her some practice to figure things out. One of those things is the sofa. Of course, all of our dogs are allowed on the sofas (we have three in the house), though some seem to prefer dog beds and never make any attempt to climb up. Peanut has always been one of those dogs….until today.

Our primary sofa (the one in front of the big TV  ) is a dual recliner sofa (how did we ever live without one??), so I was sitting on my recliner end watching TV while Ken was finishing up work. Peanut cautiously approached and I could see a glimmer in her eye. As she got to the sofa, she put one leg up…and then the next…not sure what reaction she’d get from me, her eyes were averted from mine and darting around. Of course, I was thrilled she was interested in climbing up, so I gently patted the sofa spot next to me and cheerfully encouraged, “C’mon Nutter! Good girl!”

In a sudden and dramatic flinging of her body, Peanut threw herself against me with her butt firmly planted in the millimeter adjacent to mine. It was so shockingly swift that I was actually startled a little bit  At this point, I’m not even sure she was sure what just happened! She was stiff as a board and her eyes were still darting in every direction. I really had to fight back a hearty chuckle as I tried to soothe her and let her know she was OK and could relax. I was also trying to get Ken’s attention to grab the camera and try to capture the moment for posterity!

He finally emerged from his office, camera in hand and captured our precious Peanut’s retirement milestone: discovering the couch. She’s officially earned her Couch Potato title ;)

(Please ignore me…I’d been working out 30 minutes prior and I’m pretty sure my Tshirt is even inside out  ). Here she is, not quite sure what’s supposed to happen next…

Look at me! I’m a real couch potato greyhound now!
